Derek ExnerDr. Derek Exner is an Associate Professor in the Libin Cardiovascular Institute of Alberta at the University of Calgary. He is a Clinician Scientist of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and a Scholar of the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research.

Dr. Exner is a heart rhythm specialist and clinical trials expert. His clinical work and research focus on device therapy for patients with heart failure and the non-invasive identification of people at risk for serious heart rhythm problems.

Dr. Exner earned his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Saskatchewan. He then completed Internal Medicine and Cardiology Residencies in Calgary and London, followed by Cardiac Electrophysiology, Device and Clinical Trials fellowships in Calgary, London, and Washington. He obtained a Master’s Degree in Epidemiology and Clinical Trials from Johns Hopkins University before returning to Calgary in 2000.

Dr. Exner’s research is supported by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Alberta, and a number of industry partners.

Dr. Exner has authored or co-authored more than 100 articles, book chapters, and abstracts related to device therapy and heart failure, including publications in leading medical journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of the American Medical Association, Circulation, and the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.
